WCID Wednesday: Rest, Reset, Take Action

Happy Wednesday, Shit Givers.

Ok, actually on this particular Wednesday, I’m feeling anything but happy — grief, sadness, confusion, anger, yes — definitely not happy. But I refuse to feel defeated.

Moments like this are the reason we built What Can I Do? To give you the tools to make the world a better place, to keep pushing forward incrementally but collectively, to never stop fighting for healthier, safer, more equitable communities.

Moments like this make it unavoidably apparent how much work there is left to do. And holy shit, is there a lot of work left to do.

Our communities — especially those who are marginalized, who have been organizing and showing up and doing the work every day already because their lives literally depend on it — need us (now more than ever).

We need each other.

And as much as we all need, and deserve, some rest, you signed up for an answer to “what can I do?” I can’t leave you hanging today.

So take the time you need to grieve, to take a breath, to do what you need to do to reset, and then keep showing up. Every goddamn day.

The work can’t stop.

PS — Haven’t actually made your profile yet? It takes less than a minute, is free for 30 days, and you just need your phone and ID! Get started!

Let’s go.

— Willow

Change starts at the local level. We are developing local policy actions with resources you can take to local meetings to advocate for issues you care about.

These one-page scripts are developed in partnership with reputable organizations doing the work and are designed to be as repeatable as possible across municipalities.

First up: Developed with our friends at Rewiring America, you can now advocate for electric vehicle charging infrastructure (go) and heat pump installation (go) in your community.

  • Get Funded: If we’ve gotta take climate action to the private sector, that’s what we’ve gotta do. Scale climate solutions with the Climate Finance Fund (go)

  • Donate: Support parking reform efforts in your city — that have impacts on climate change, equity, housing, and traffic with the Parking Reform Network (go)

  • Learn: About the most effective and effecient ways to solve multiple problems at once with the Multisolving Institute (go)

  • Volunteer: to bring the climate action movement to your faith group with GreenFaith (go)

  • Learn: where the best places are to plant trees using the WRI Atlas of Forest and Landscape Restoration (go)

  • Invest: In a better future by investing in farmers practicing regenerative agriculture with Farm VC (go)

Want to read what the people working on the frontlines of the future are reading?

Every week, I ask our podcast guest, "What’s a book you’ve read this year that’s opened your mind to a topic you haven’t considered before, or that’s changed your thinking in some way?"

And every week, we add their picks to a list on Bookshop, where every purchase on the site financially supports independent bookstores.

  • Donate: to disaster relief (go). People are still hurting, help them recover.

  • Invest: in climate solutions (go). Get climate tech projects off the ground.

  • Volunteer: for mental health (go). If there was ever a time to do this, it’s now.

  • Buy: bikes and e-bikes (go). Let’s ride.

  • Donate: to food security (go). Get some people fed.

  • Donate: to mutual aid. If we can’t rely on the powers that be to protect us, we’ve gotta protect each other (go)

  • Learn: about reproductive rights so you can help the women in your life and in your community access proper health care (go)

  • Volunteer: to improve education in your community, whether you’re participating in grassroots journalism or running for school board (go)

Check in with your loved ones and go outside today. We’re all in this together.

Remember — if you don’t have the capacity today, especially — you can save actions for later with a WCID profile. Thank you as always for giving a shit.
