WCID: Here's what's possible when we show up
Willow Beck
By Willow Beck

Happy Hump Day, Shit Givers.

Thanks in part to your calls through WCID, the new Virginia Assembly already passed four constitutional amendments — the right to abortion care and other kinds of reproductive care, to same-sex marriage, and to voting rights restoration.

This is super awesome, and means those will go to a voter referendum in the fall.

But there’s a lot of work left to do — and we’ve got all the rest of the bills loaded in. Just drop in your address and we’ll share your reps, a dialer, and a quick script.

Keep it up, Virginia!

Much much more to come on more states (reply or share this for more info!) — let’s go!

🫶 Mutual aid makes the world go round

  • Use the Mutual Aid Hub to quickly and easily identify mutual aid networks near you to either offer resources your community needs, or submit a needs request (go)

  • Climate change is real, and it’s here, so we need to start preparing our communities for the impacts. Get involved with building climate resiliency and find a CREW near you (go)

  • Find your nearest Mask Bloc to access masks, COVID tests, and other high-quality PPE and resources for free, and help keep everyone in your community safe (go)

  • Discover how to directly and most usefully contribute to vulnerable people in your community using this database from Slow Food USA (go)

  • If you’re trying to make room in your cupboards, and have some extra, unopened, not-expired formula on hand, donate it to the Free Formula Exchange so they can get it into the bellies of babies who need it (go)

🧠 Take care of your (and everyone else’s) mental health

  • Find resources for dealing with a world that is metaphorically and literally on fire at the Climate Psychiatry Alliance (go)

  • Build resilience with peer-to-peer support at the Good Grief Network, so you can reorient yourself from despair toward meaningful action (go)

  • Manage your stress and anxiety with courses and guided meditations from Ten Percent Happier. Every little bit counts (go)

  • Support mental health resources for LGBTQ+ youth by donating to The Trevor Project, and help build a more welcoming and loving world for everyone (go)

  • Find purpose through connection and join the network at The Work That Reconnects for support and inspiration in building a regenerative and thriving world (go)

☑ Some civil rights, as a treat

  • Support the work of Lambda Legal, an organization of lawyers fighting against morally wrong and legally unconstitutional laws that violate the civil rights of LGBTQ+ people (go)

  • Plan International defends the rights of children and girls in over 80 countries, ensuring free, equal access to quality education and protecting children from harm (go)

  • Volunteer with the Human Rights Campaign to advocate for equality, support policy change, and promote inclusive laws and protections (go)

  • Learn how the Transition Minerals Tracker seeks to improve the human rights practices of over 250 companies and their mining operations, so we can ensure that a cleaner future is also more just (go)

  • Call your Senator and tell them to vote NO on the SAVE Act, which would make voting harder for millions of citizens (go)

📚 More media literacy, please

  • Teach K-12 students how to take ownership over their digital lives, and prepare them to be safe and ethical in a digital world using resources from Common Sense’s Digital Citizenship Curriculum (go)

  • As misinformation runs rampant on social media and with AI deepfakes becoming increasingly more convincing, learn how you can combat misinformation online (go)

  • Become more media literate for the sake of your own mental health and for a functioning, healthy society by taking the Media Literacy Crash Course (go)

  • Find more teaching resources to arm today’s youth with the skills and information they need to navigate the online world at Media Smarts (go)

🌏 Support for the Global South

  • Project Hope is on the ground in 20+ countries in Africa, delivering comprehensive training programs for health workers on the front lines (go)

  • Invest in solar development where CO2 emissions grow the fastest and prevent more carbon per dollar than any other investment by making a solar loan with Renewables (go)

  • Improve air quality, reduce deforestation, and lower emissions by donating to Burn, an organization providing efficient cooking appliances for countries in Africa (go)

  • Build just and equitable systems all over the world with Co-Impact’s locally-rooted programs (go)

  • Use the Global South Climate Database to find climate experts from all over the world who work on climate science, policy, and energy (go)

♻ Sustainable products that aren’t poisoning you or the planet

  • Make your next smartphone more sustainable using Fairphone. They’ve been striving to reduce their use of conflict minerals by building devices made from recycled or responsibly sourced materials (go)

  • Get speakers and headphones made from sustainable bamboo, recycled aluminum, and reclaimed organic cotton from the House of Marley (go)

  • Everybody poops, even you, and you can do it sustainably by purchasing toilet paper from Who Gives A Crap. They make toilet paper, paper towel, tissues and more from recycled fibers or bamboo, and they donate 50% of their profits to WASH programs in the developing world (go)

  • Use Yuka to analyze the health impact of your food and personal products, while suggesting healthier alternatives (go)

  • Find restored antique and vintage home furnishings instead of constantly replacing cheaply made furniture at Rejuvenation (go)

That’s it for this week! Go get ‘em.

Thank you — as always — for giving a shit.
