Welcome to the week.

It’s Sept. 30, which is Truth and Reconciliation Day in Canada (that’s where I am, hello), a day to recognize the terrible legacy of the Canadian residential school system.

Check out the action steps below for some ways to participate in reconciliation today (even if you are not Canadian).

And now, the news.

This week:

  • ⚡Clean hydrogen policy

  • 🧠Mental health, mapped

  • 🧑‍🍳Climate-friendly chefs

  • 💻Locally-run LLMs

  • And more

Have a great week,

— Willow

Last week, we asked: Do you know how your business affects ecosystems?

You said:

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 Yes (35%)

“I work in the movie industry which is terrible for waste.”

“Consists of renewing musical instruments to sound good when played, otherwise trashed...”

🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️ Kind of (23%)

“Because we have a repurposing component as well as a frugal expense management side, our business model supports sustainability.”

🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️ Not really (16%)

🟨🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️ No (26%)

New Shit Giver Joan is here because “I'm retired, I finally have the freedom to be useful. As the matriarch of the family it feels more important than ever to live by example. I'm truly afraid for the next generations…I believe climate change will be their biggest threat. I am but one voice but hoping this will help me find a way to use it .“

I love this. Welcome!

⚡️ Climate change:

  • Another day, another lawsuit against Big Oil for lying about the impacts of their products, this time for the claim that all plastics are recyclable (only about 5% actually gets recycled, sorry wish-cyclers) — Big Oil lobbyists have also been found to be behind anti-protest laws

  • Nuclear power, however controversial, remains an important part of the clean energy transition, although advancements in solar and battery technology mean that it’s probably never going to be the dominant energy source

  • 🌏 As temperatures continue to rise, and electricity remains scarce, Nigeria is facing a cooling crisis

  • Clean hydrogen policy remains in limbo as policymakers consider the best ways to use it (like by directing funding towards industries that can’t easily be powered by other renewable sources)

  • 🌎 Many of the most climate vulnerable nations already have crowded cities, that will continue to need to absorb millions of climate migrants over the next few decades

🦠 Health & Bio:

  • One in five adults in the US are struggling with mental health, but some regions (like the South and Mid-East) are more heavily impacted than others, suggesting the need to prioritize resources in those places

  • States that have passed anti-transgender laws have seen suicide attempts by transgender and nonbinary youth increase by up to 72 percent over five years.

  • 🌍 Trials for a highly-anticipated TB-vaccine, which could have a huge impact on the world’s TB epidemic, are about to start

  • In preparation for the expected winter coronavirus wave, you can order free covid tests again

  • Speaking of COVID, some recent research on it’s impact on cognitive function, emphasizes the need to continue to take it seriously and do what you can to avoid getting it

💦 Food & Water:

  • The food system has gotta change if we’re going to adequately reduce global emissions, but its complexity means that a diverse approach to solutions is required

  • California has a new and improved plastic bag ban, after a loophole in the first ban ended up making the problem worse

  • Chefs can level-up the farm-to-table approach to make restaurants more environmentally friendly by supporting traditional food systems and building markets for climate-adapted crops

  • 🌎 Nextgen potatoes are coming, as hybrid breeding allows farmers to create new varieties that are resistant to disease and drought

  • 🌎 As climate change decimates global coffee crops, the cost of a cup of coffee is inevitably going to go up. It’s economics 101.

👩‍💻 Beep Boop:

  • 🌎 Researchers are starting to use small, locally run LLMs instead of web-based chat-bots like ChatGPT, due to advantages such as cost savings, privacy production, and reproducibility.

  • 🌏 Researchers have also successfully used advanced machine learning to deceive Google’s bot detection system (reCAPTCHAv2)

  • Carmakers have yet again been exposed for web bugs that have the potential to let millions of vehicles be hacked and tracked

  • OpenAI is having its training data examined in copyright lawsuits that allege the works were used without consent or compensation

  • Data preservation in the digital age faces many challenges, suggesting a need for better approaches to digital archiving

  • Donate to the First Nations Development Institute to support Indigenous knowledge keeping and sovereignty.

  • Volunteer with the Grand Canyon Trust to protect the environmental and public health of the Grand Canyon Region, and support the rights of its Indigenous peoples.

  • Get educated about the colonial history of Canada by attending these Lunch and learn webinars from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. There’s one every day this week. And if you’re in the US, learn about the history and culture of the Indigenous peoples in your region using resources from Lessons of Our Land.

  • Be heard about giving Indigenous communities access to the tools they need to mitigate the climate crisis and ask your representative to support the Tribal Climate Health Assurance Act.

  • 🌍 Invest in solar development int he Global South using Renewables.
